Counseling is a curiosity. It often provokes people stepping up to the edge of it and peeking in quickly, hoping to catch a glimpse without being noticed. It’s intimidating, the idea of opening up to someone with your “problems”. It’s intimidating because most of us walk around trying to pretend like we don’t have any problems. At least not serious ones. And the last thing we want is someone turning on a flashlight or going around stirring up trouble. Many of us already struggle with the voice of the internal critic as it is. Can you relate to hearing that persistent and disheartening thought cycle where we beat ourselves up and imagine how the rest of the world so gloriously has it all together and how the rest of the world is probably about to hold a secret convention where they all talk about how little you have it together. People want to peek into counseling because they can't imagine how having to confess how are broken or dysfunctional they are is actually helpful. Honestly, that does sound incredibly terrifying. Which is why I’m writing this. Because I want to tell you that my counseling is nothing like that at all. I start with your heart. (the best most beautiful thing about you) and we go from there. It’s not a diagnosis fest, where you get labeled, analyzed and negated. It’s not a lecture where I explain why you’re so messed up. It’s not any of those things. It’s a much safer and more profound experience than all that. It’s not my job to fix you or tell you how to change. It’s not my job to heal you or diagnose you or tell you what your problems are. I actually believe you already know all that stuff and it’s my job to cheer you on. I work for you. I work for your heart. I work hard so you can find the peace you're looking for. I listen until the questions that need to be asked appear in the air above you and then I tap your shoulder gently and say, “what about that? ^” I work hard to be a safe and compassionate bucket so that you can work hard releasing all the heavy emotional sludge that holds you down. I work for you because I know that you are headed somewhere important. I work for you because I know you have incredible work to do in the world. You are going to go on to do the phenomenal things that call your name once we have sorted through the mucky parts. And by the way your heart is good and incredible. Sure we might have to unpack some mucky parts first, but those mucky parts are not unacceptable parts of you! Are you ready to have someone work for your heart? Someone who gets it? Someone who has a wealth of knowledge and experience but will not use it against you? I offer that. Call or email me to get started. |
